TÜRKPATENT organized the '26 April World Intellectual Property Day' Program

The Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) organized the '26 April World Intellectual Property Day' program, with the participation of Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil and TÜRKPATENT President Prof. Dr. Zeki Durak.

In his speech, he stated "In recent years, entrepreneurship and the number of technology companies in this field have been increasing in Türkiye. The most important source of this is the intellectual property they own. Intellectual property plays an important role in their internationalization, commercialization, product creation and growth."

Yozgatlıgil mentioned that digital transformation is also important in addition to green transformation, and added that it is important to protect intellectual property rights in the digitalization field.

TÜRKPATENT expands the country's intellectual product pool

TÜRKPATENT President Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak also said that this year's theme of World Intellectual Property Day is "Building Our Sustainable Future with Innovation".

Stating that the first expression that comes to mind when it comes to innovation is intellectual property, Durak said, "Intellectual property appears as one of the main factors affecting the growth and sustainability of companies."

Durak noted that intellectual property rights play a critical role in the 17 sustainable development goals that the United Nations aims to achieve by the end of 2030.

Pointing out that awareness in the field of intellectual property in Türkiye is increasing day by day, Durak said, "Our country has made good progress in the field of intellectual property in recent years. TÜRKPATENT is expanding our country's intellectual product pool."

Durak stated that the protection, use and commercialization of intellectual property rights are of critical importance in the National Technology Move. In this context, Durak emphasized that encouraging R&D investments, technology transfer and increasing competitiveness are important and said:

"According to the Global Innovation Index, while there is a decrease in the R&D expenditures of countries such as Japan and America, it is a noteworthy advancement that our country ranks second after the Republic of Korea with a 10 percent increase in R&D expenditures. Again, in the middle economy group, as one of the top countries with the fastest increase in the last 10 years, Türkiye succeeded to be among the 'top 40' in 2023, while being among the 'top 70' in 2013. In addition, the total number of domestic patent applications in the field of green transformation in our country in the last 20 years amounted to 10 thousand 875 and the number of domestic patent registrations has been 2 thousand 465."

Durak stated that, according to the 2023 World Intellectual Property Indicators Report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization, Türkiye ranks 12th in the world with regards to domestic patent applications, 4th in domestic trademark applications, while 1st in Europe in the same category, and 2nd in the world in domestic design applications, while 1st in Europe in the same category.

Furthermore, Yozgatlıgil and Durak launched the solar energy system installed on the roof of the Office, that is anticipated to supply 35 percent of TÜRKPATENT's electrical needs.
